The “Mikveh Bill” advanced earlier this week by the Ministerial Committee on Legislation aims to circumvent a Supreme Court decision allowing Jews of all denominations to use public mikvehs for ritual purposes in their own ways. The bill is patently discriminatory. If the state allocates taxpayers’ money to build ritual baths, why should they be available only to those whose religious outlook and behaviours toe the stringent line of the ultra-Orthodox rabbinate?
